What should I check before buying filament?

Quick answer

PLA and PETG normally work in an open-frame printer with a standard nozzle. More technical or fibre-filled materials may require a hardened nozzle, enclosed printer or actively heated chamber. Always check the four statuses of the specific product.

“Recommended” means the print may still succeed without it, but quality or reliability may be less consistent. “Required” means we recommend choosing another material if your printer cannot meet the requirement.

What do the indicators mean, and how do I check them?

Hardened nozzle

What is it? A nozzle made from wear-resistant steel or another durable material; a standard nozzle is often brass.

Why does it matter? Carbon- and glass-fibre fills quickly wear a soft nozzle wider, reducing dimensional accuracy.

How do I check? The printer or installed nozzle description should state “hardened steel”, “ObXidian” or another wear-resistant material.

Enclosed printer

What is it? The printer has walls, a lid and a door that separate the print area from the surrounding room.

Why does it matter? Draughts cool the part unevenly and can cause corners to lift or layers to crack.

How do I check? An open-frame printer is not enclosed. A DIY cover may help, but its safety and temperature control remain the user’s responsibility.

Heated chamber

What is it? The printer actively keeps the chamber at a set temperature; this is not the same as a simple enclosure.

Why does it matter? The layers of a large technical part cool more evenly and internal stresses are reduced.

How do I check? The manufacturer must specify active chamber heating and a target temperature. If it does not, treat the printer as simply enclosed.

Drying

What is it? Controlled heating of filament to remove moisture absorbed by the material.

Why does it matter? Moisture turns to steam in the hot nozzle, causing popping, a rough surface, voids and weak layers.

How do I check? The product page shows the status, temperature and time. Do not use an oven or drying programme that is too hot for the material.

A one-minute pre-purchase check

  1. Find the exact printer model. Models from the same manufacturer can have different enclosures and nozzles.
  2. Check the filament diameter. Most RUUMIK filaments are 1.75 mm; make sure your printer is compatible.
  3. Read the four product-page indicators. Do not decide from the material name alone.
  4. Check the red requirements. If your printer cannot meet a required condition, choose an easier material.
  5. Plan drying and storage. Add drying time before printing when necessary.
An advanced-user exception is not beginner advice

An experienced user may experiment outside a requirement, for example with a small ABS part on an open-frame printer. This does not make the setup reliable or change the product-page requirement. For beginners, we show the setup with the higher chance of success.

PLA and PETG
A standard nozzle and open-frame printer are generally suitable. Drying PETG is often recommended.
TPU
An open-frame printer and standard nozzle are suitable; drying is important.
CF- and GF-filled materials
A hardened nozzle is required. The remaining requirements depend on the base material.
ABS+
An enclosed printer is required; a heated chamber and drying may be recommended.
ASA, PC and PA
Check the specific product. An enclosed printer is normally required, while a heated chamber and drying are often important.
