Your first print with a new filament

Quick answer

Select a suitable material profile in your slicer, use the temperature and speed ranges from the product page and watch the first layer. Change only one setting at a time so you can understand the result.

Five checks

  • The filament diameter matches your printer.
  • The printer meets all required conditions on the product page.
  • The filament has been dried if necessary.
  • The print bed is clean and the printer is ready.
  • The nozzle is clean and has the correct diameter and material.
Slicer profile

Start with an existing profile

In your printer’s slicer, choose a manufacturer or material-family profile, such as “Generic PETG”. Then compare the nozzle temperature, bed temperature, speed and cooling with the values on the product page.

If the product page gives a range, start near the middle of the range or from the printer’s ready-made profile. Do not blindly copy every setting from a different printer.

Four basic settings

What should you understand before starting?

Nozzle temperature

Controls how freely the material melts. Too low can produce weak layers; too high increases stringing and the risk of material degradation.

Bed temperature

Helps the first layer adhere. Too low encourages detachment; too high can soften the lower part of the print.

Speed

Higher speed demands more from the printer and material. With an unfamiliar spool, start toward the slower half of the product-page range.

Cooling

The fan helps layers solidify, but excessive cooling can weaken layer adhesion in technical materials.

First layer

What should you check visually?

  • Lines stick to the bed and do not follow the nozzle.
  • There are no large gaps between adjacent lines.
  • The nozzle does not scrape the bed or press the material transparent.
  • The corners stay on the bed and do not begin to lift.
The first 10–15 minutes

Stay with the printer

Most adhesion, detachment and material-build-up problems appear early. Stop the print if the part comes loose from the bed or material collects around the nozzle. Unattended printing is not a good way to test a new material.

Do not change everything at once

If you change temperature, speed, cooling and retraction at the same time, you cannot know which change helped. Make one controlled adjustment and print a small test again.

First check filament dryness. Then test a lower temperature or a small retraction adjustment.
Corners lift
Check draughts, the enclosure requirement and bed adhesion. If necessary, use a brim or an adhesive suitable for the material.
Weak or brittle part
Dry the filament and check that nozzle temperature is within the product range. Raise the temperature in small steps.

After printing

Preserve the quality for next time

Let the part and bed cool before removal. Seal the opened spool in a bag with desiccant or place it in a dry storage box. For moisture-sensitive material, mark the opening date and latest drying date on the spool.
