When and how should I dry filament?

Quick answer

First check the drying status, temperature and time for the specific product. Drying removes moisture that has already been absorbed. A sealed bag or dry box helps keep new moisture away afterwards.

Typical symptoms of wet filament

  • Popping or hissing sounds while printing.
  • Hairs, strings and wisps on the surface of the part.
  • A rough, matte, uneven or bubbly surface.
  • A weak part whose layers separate easily.
Drying is not the same as dry storage

Drying uses heat and time to remove moisture already absorbed by the filament. Dry storage slows down new moisture absorption in a sealed bag or box with active desiccant. Silica gel alone will not quickly dry an already wet spool.

Step by step

A safe drying workflow

  1. Check the drying temperature and duration on the product page. Different blends in the same material family may need different settings.
  2. Use a filament dryer or another suitable controlled drying solution. Make sure the device holds the desired temperature evenly.
  3. Dry for the stated time. A very wet spool or one left open for a long time may need a longer cycle if the manufacturer permits it.
  4. Let a very hot spool cool before handling. Do not bend hot filament or deform the spool.
  5. Print immediately or seal the spool in a dry environment. This is especially important for TPU, PA and other materials that absorb moisture quickly.
Safety before speed

Do not use a temperature that could soften the filament or spool. An ordinary kitchen oven can fluctuate significantly. The instructions for the specific product and drying device always take priority over this general workflow.

Is a new vacuum-packed spool always dry?
