Which filament suits my project?

Quick answer

Choose a material by the property your part needs most. For an easy first print, start with PLA. For an everyday part that must withstand moisture or a larger load, consider PETG. Then check the requirements of the specific product.

Material families

Nine practical starting points

These are general directions. Additives and manufacturer settings can differ between products in the same material family.

PLA

Good for: prototypes, decorations and ordinary indoor use.
Limitation: does not tolerate heat or long-term sunlight well.

Limitation: can string and may stick too firmly to the bed.

PLA · Beginner
A hardened nozzle, enclosed printer and heated chamber are not usually needed. Dry according to symptoms or the product instructions.
PETG · Beginner
A standard nozzle and open-frame printer are suitable; drying is often recommended.
TPU · Intermediate
An open-frame printer is suitable, but drying is important. A direct-drive extruder makes printing easier.
PLA-CF / PETG-CF · Intermediate
A hardened nozzle is required; drying is recommended.
ABS+ · Advanced
An enclosed printer is required; a heated chamber and drying may be recommended.
ASA · Advanced
An enclosed printer is required. Larger or more technical parts may also need a heated chamber.
PC · Advanced
An enclosed printer, a stable high chamber temperature and dry filament are important.
PA / PA-CF · Advanced
Drying is required. CF-filled PA needs a hardened nozzle; always check the specific product.
